Not too
long ago, I wore the green kaki of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of
Nigeria for one last time. I was also a batch C corps member. Today, thousands
of Nigerian youth around the country will be wearing their own kaki for the
last time. There is excitement all around from them, friend and family alike.
Many cannot believe they have made it thus far in life. Some were not given any
chance, but today they seem to have surprised even themselves. For some, it is
a relief of some sought from the stress of service year and a release into the
world for good. Which ever is the case, we are good to go... *SmileS*.
I
remember how nostalgic I felt. The anxiety was high. I wondered what to expect
after my service – how would my ship sale? Do I cruise on autopilot or find a
co-pilot ASAP to give me a hand. Days to my passing out, apart from the fact
that I was drained financially from various payments I had to make in the
different groups I belonged to during the period, I was also drained
emotionally because it had become obvious to me that I would be missing friends
especially “the one” I fell in love with - a love that went soar.
Psychologically, I was heavy too. I could only force a smile as the days passed
by.
So many
of my friends are passing out today 15th October 2015 (they must
have collected their passing out certificate at the time of publishing this)
and I know how rickety the feeling could be. I encourage them not to lose hope
in themselves. If they could have come thus far, then they can reach even
greater heights. They need to keep up a positive and dogged spirit. The
situation of the country might not be most encouraging, still this same country have produced people who distinguished themselves against all odds... and of course, things are getting better.
