A Panic too Soon

On my way to work yesterday, I had this experience that reminded me that no one is really safe as long as that person really exist. I was going to be a minute or so late to work if the keke I entered had not left the bustop on time. As if the keke man knew I was going late, he drove as though he wanted me to meetup on time. I couldn’t complain o; I guess the keke man was doing me a favour. And so, with the speed and all the potholes everywhere, it was a very bumpy ride, one that had me hit my head on the frame of the keke severally, still I couldn’t complain – the keke man was doing me a favour.
Nearly 300 meters away from the bustop I was supposed to alight, we heard a bang sound, and I noticed the keke man struggling to control the motion of the keke. I couldn’t lookout of the keke to really ascertain what was wrong; I was the passenger at the middle. The next thing I noticed, the lady at my right side shouted “Jesus!”, while the man at my left, like one action movie, jumped out of the unstable keke and crash landed – what was he thinking, I thought to myself.
Guys, it is not this keke o... mbok
Finally, the keke halted. The lady and I who were still sited tight inside the keke came down. That was when I actually discovered what had happened: the keke’s front tire burst causing the driver to lose control over the keke momentarily. The driver confirmed it too and begged us to continue our journey on another keke (before?). Now all these small but big drama happened at the middle of the road and I wandered what would have happened if there was a fast moving vehicle coming from our behind, or we had an obstacle ahead of us. God just saved me and the other passengers form pains and possibly sorrow. Help me thank him ooo.
As for the passenger that jump of the keke, I am sure by now he will be nursing an ankle injury by now. I think he panicked to soon - thank God it was just a sprained ankle (yea, I remember, his shoes to took a turn for the worst; that sight was a little rather comical).
It’s very important that we don’t panic unnecessarily, especially in times of crises. When we panic just like that, the tendency of falling victim to the crises becomes very high, as we don’t give ourselves to weigh the consequence of our actions, instead we become a slave to our reflex action or popular actions (we just follow the crowd). We should be able to take a moment, no matter how short it is to ascertain what is really going on, which should in turn inform our the move we make next. Please don’t be like me, who inside the keke was just somewhat indifferent about the accident that I was involved in; “e remain small, I for carry my phone out to take video the scene seef and snap small picture…lol”.
Friends, let’s refuse to panic unnecessarily, stay alert and safe today, the rest of the week, the new month, the rest of the year and always.

Cheers!

  3. Oh bless the Lord my soul for keeping you safe. What you said is true, what kills most people in times of crisis or accident is the panic and impulsive actions they take at the very moment. It has it's pros and cons though

    1. Sometimes...? sure. But there are actions shouldn't let reflex lead us to; like running helter-skelter when we hear gun shuts fired, or an explosion... We do this a lot in this part of the world. I am of the opinion that we can still have some level of influence on some of our reflexes, and save ourselves from a lot.

      Safety first!
      Thanks for your comment Amaka.

  7. Funny enough, same thing happened to me today ! I didn't panic though but I was shaken after the experience. In my case, tires didn't burst but the coil which held the front tire to the tricycle broke! I almost swore off Kekes today but somehow, I got over the incident. I guess this accident is coming as a shock because we feel so safe in those tricycles. It's so much convenient to halt a Keke instead of a bus and it can maneuver through the most serious traffic scenarios. May God help us and thank God for saving your life and mine too.

  9. Panic or no panic whatever will be, will be. We should pray for God's divine protection everywhere we go.

Thank God for his protection over you.

    1. Hmm... little do you know that Panic can cause that which is not suppose to be to be. If you remember the Ikeja Army Cantonment Bomb blast in 2002... most of the lives lost them, over 1,000 was lost due to panic - running into canal.

We should think safety first and that includes not panicking unnecessarily, then God will surely do his own part.

  12. I thank God for the safety...
sometimes people do what they think is best at the moment even when little thought has been given but end up finding out it ain't the best move. If there was an on collision with another vehicle, then the action of that man may have been considered wise. Am just saying that safety is of the Lord. Also we can't really prescribe a particular solution for events like this...

    1. We cannot over emphasis the important of safety education for all... it doesn't keep you safe, it just reduces ones chances of being a victim of circumstance.
But ultimately like you summarised it: "safety is of the Lord".
