Expectations on Us

I was just outside my house doing my laundry, like I do every Saturday morning and I noticed some children (about 6 of them – the oldest should be 7yrs or so) gathered near the gutter very close to my house. As I was about to take my glance off them, then did I realize that one of them, two actually, were inside the gutter. This caught my attention and I left what I was doing to pay more attention to what was actually going on there.
Now, as I looked more closely, I noticed that the two kids inside the gutter were deeping their hands into the sewage as if in search of something. For your very concerned minds, the gutter is not a deep one and it is stagnant like most Lagos gutters, so for these kids, there was no fear of being sunk in or getting carried away by a nonexistent flow. The only problem is that the gutter is very dirty; like there is any clean gutter in Lagos… lol. But these kids just had to do what they were doing. I noticed the worry and sense of urgency as they went on and observing that there was no adult amongst them; I had to abandon what I was doing to go check things out and help them out if I could.

One of the kids (I guess, one of the two inside the gutter) was sent to get something from his dad’s car, and carelessly dropped the car keys in the gutter. “Yeepka! My daddy will kill me today” he must have thought or even said to himself. His instincts told him the only solution was to find the keys anyhow he could and that is what he was doing when I saw them.

How often do we get careless with life and end up in situations that make us feel very disappointing after being entrusted with so much (even when it seems less). Expectations can make us feel uneazy, but we can't run away from it. On that which we are given lie expectations of various forms, some of which are already know from the unset (probably stated), while we figure others as we journey through life. For some of us who are still students, our parents or guardians expect us not to fail, for some others the expectation is that they come tops in their various classes. The expectaions on us could be from any sphare of our life: family, carear, religious, moral, relationship etc. Expectations on us vary and somehow they affect the path we take through life.
It takes discernment to know what expectation on us are right and should be our motivating factor for attainment of goals. The greatest of these expectation comes from those who love us; our family, friends and lovers. Did I fail to mention our God? Yes, even before others, should we observer God’s expectation on us. Nothing can compare to his loves on and for us.

Anyways, the kids told me the problem and implored my help. I helped them find the keys with a rake and I told them to go and ensure they had a good bath. They rinsed themselves and the car key outside, got what they were told to get from the car and went in.

There is no guarantee of meeting expectations without challenges. Remain focused at the goal, ask for assistance when you must and in all stay right; when the results come forth, we will be better for it.
Cheers guys!

    1. Mami, I expect chocolate from you regularly...lol. Expectations can be likened to wishes. You know what happens if wishes were horses? Its not like we don't ride sometimes though.
